Secretary Kerry’s Priorities for Belgium

Alan Blinken (Ambassador to Belgium, 1993-1998)

_____

As the Secretary will no doubt be making many visits to Belgium for NATO and EU meetings, it would be advisable that on his first trip he pay a courtesy call on Prime Minster Di Rupo. A courtesy call with his Majesty King Albert would be a first since Bill Clinton and do much for our image in Belgium.

Belgium has supported us in every major conflict since World War II and was the protecting power in Croatia while we were engaged in Bosnia. There are no major policy disagreements between our two countries. Belgium is also European Headquarters to approximately 1,500 U.S. corporations.

A few minutes of the Secretary’s time for bilateral relations is worth a year’s effort by a new Ambassador.
